Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology at the MHL

Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology: New Artistic Major
With the appointment of Prof. Nicola L. Hein as Professor of Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology, MHL is expanding its range of courses to include attractive, future-oriented areas. From the summer semester 2023, Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology can also be chosen as an artistic major in the Bachelor of Arts.

9 good reasons for Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology:

  • Artistic major in Electronic Music, Sound Artist, Sound Installation, Instrument Building, Intermedia Art, etc.
  • promotes innovative, experimental and multimedia creativity in music and sound
  • develops solo and ensemble formats
  • is realised on a wide variety of stages, from concert halls to the Internet
  • includes intermedial work (with video, light etc.)
  • sets impulses in creative and novel constellations and co-operations
  • uses smartphones, tablets, video cameras, software, EEGs, EMGs, midi controllers etc. as sound generators, instruments and effects devices
  • continues to develop in harmony with computer and electronic technologies
  • implements digital, analogue and hybrid methods of sound generation and control

Basic idea
Digital and analogue techniques have affected the practice of music since their emergence and have profoundly changed it in the 20th and 21st centuries. Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology explores contemporary modes of engagement with digital and analogue sound generators, machine learning, augmented reality, intermedia performances and many more.

Study
The artistic major Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology in the degree programme "Music Education" (Bachelor of Arts) focuses on artistic-musical performance using digital and analogue processes in the field of electronic music and sound art. The degree programme qualifies students for creative use of current software and hardware in the field of music, creative use of machine learning, independent construction of electronic musical instruments, audiovisual works, expands one's own artistic portfolio and provides diverse impulses for further musical development.

Future music teachers are enabled to give pupils access to current technologies and their creative application in music teaching through the creative use of software, programming, machine learning, internet music practices, electronic and analogue sound production.

Study contents
The artistic major Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology in the Bachelor of Arts comprises individual artistic tuition (8 semesters) and a final artistic presentation (1 semester):

  • Major I (4 semesters)
    > digital stage performance solo and in ensemble  
    > work with quadrophony, higher order ambisonics and more
    > Programming of synthesizers, effects, controllers, live sampling e.g. in Max/MSP, Ableton Live, Pure Data, Faust, Python, etc.
    > Studio production (dealing with microphonics, arranging, editing, mixing, mastering)
    > Group improvisation & sound painting, electroacoustic improvisation
  • Major II (4 semesters)
    > Making music in digital networks (telematic performance)
    > Sound installations
    > Creative application of machine learning
    > Electronic instrument making (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Latte Panda Alpha, Jetson Nano, 3D Printing, Lasercutting etc.)
    > Audiovisual work (live video, augmented and virtual reality, etc.)
  • Examination module (1 semester)
    > Development and implementation of own multimedia and interdisciplinary concepts.
    > In the course of the programme, various performance opportunities, participation in projects, class evenings and cooperations.

Requirements in the qualifying examination
In order to be able to study Sound Arts & Creative Music Technology as an artistic major, the following points must be presented or completed in the aptitude test:

  • a 10-minute live performance of your own music using your own digital and/or analogue sound media (computer, controller, modular synthesiser, no-input mixer, looper or similar),
  • a 5-minute improvisation on a musical concept of your own choice, and
  • an approx. 3-minute explanatory video on the electronic system / instrument used, which deals with the musical and technical working method.
